Human evolution is nothing but intelligence yoking herself with stupidity. To make use of reason to correct natural instincts is just insanity. To employ our intelligence to atrophize, muzzle or even fight our food and love instincts is a demonstration of ineptitude, not of intelligence. If we'd apply one tenth of the time we spend in training our logical faculties or in scientifically improving our reasoning faculties, to the cultivation and development of our instincts, we could have a chance to raise ourselves above the animals. For it is better to be devoid of any intelligence than not knowing how to use it to one's advantage..... And in spite of this non-sensical attitude, Man has reached the highest stage of material development on earth ever... What a bewildering thought to realize that civilizations have died in the past in total ignorance of man's food instinct.... What a bewildering thought to realize that our fathers, and the fathers of our fathers were lied to by cohorts of poisoners ca
lled physicians, church clerks, popes and quacks .... That was of course well before the junk food lobbies took over the responsability of maintaining human beings in the inmosts depths of intellectual darkness.
Where are you my beloved, that I bury my face between your sweet smelling breasts ? This world is not mine but it can be ours.

I am a massage therapist, energy healer, and am dedicated to helping as many people as possible discover the spontaneous & complete awakening of their light body through a combination of raw fruitarianism, essene communions, breath practice, mantra, toning, and prakriti yoga (the yoga of merging with God through the agency of nature angels.

J.R., your story moved me. You are a good storyteller, I think! Keep up the good food. I know the ups & downs & ins & outs...Man it don't come easy, as Ringo would say in the old days. But then, some of us like it hard & pioneering &cutting-edge etc. I greet you as a brother in arms. Family ain't easy either! But can be nice, even when 'cooked'. There ain't to many fruitarians around to be too choosy there I think! Or maybe I missed my soulmate by an inch, somewhere! Good luck in the new job.

I've gone completely raw and I love it! It took a while, not because of habits or cravings, but because I wasn't sure it was the right thing to do--with all the experts contradicting each other. I don't know anyone else who eats like this, so I'm happy to finally find you all here. In the beginning, I came across Richard Anderson's book, "Cleanse & Purify Thyself" (the first one). I thought he was a little nutty, but interesting. Then I found "Conscious Eating" by Gabriel Cousins--a better starting place. I followed with Anne Wigmore's work, and you three guys at "Nature's First Law," "Sprouts, The Miracle Food" by Steve Meyerowitz, and the complete works of Edmond Bordeaux Szekely. As a practicing skeptic, it's not my habit to follow anyone else's master plan, and I suspect none of you do either, but I'm encouraged and healthier than ever. In truth, I didn't start this because of any health problem. I just hate to cook.

It's inspiring to find resources like this out in the world. I have been trying to educate myself over the past five years on the connection between food and health, and find almost no support beyond going meatless in the Boston area. My dabblings into raw-foodism generally deteriorate quickly due to the isolation that such efforts tend to bring on. Food is such a big focus of how we human beings connect with eachother! I'm glad to know that there are many people grappling with the same questions that I am, and I'd be interested to know about any folks in the Boston area to network with. Thanks so much - Liz

I totally agree with the whole concept. I went to a Permaculture meeting and gave a talk on fruitarianism ending up with a discourse on Anopsology expressing my suprise that noone was a raw food eater since their main beef was the conservation of energy. Why are they cooking food? It went over well leaving 90% of the audience almost converted but all ashamed of their lack of total comittment. Regards Jo.

Hi there! I'm just browsing throught the recipes and I spotted your apple pie. I haven't tried it yet but I will soon. I've been teetering between 100% raw and about 90% raw for about the last month or so. Raw foodism is new to me. I read Nature's First Law and Raw Power and I still have went back to a bowl of pasta and sauce every once and awhile. It tasted good but I felt like I did a sell out. I figure if being "bad" is having some pasta, I'm doing pretty "good". This is also a year of firsts for me. I may have my first raw Thanksgiving, but it'll probably be by myself. It's a lifestyle I want to keep for the rest of my life. Do you have any advice for a raw foodist beginner? I don't know how to grow wheatgrass yet and don't think I have a food processor. I should get one huh? Thanks.

I'm working my way into raw foods. This website has been a great encouragement to me. I so much want to communicate with others who are already there. What is your diet like, what changes has it made in in your life, and has it affected you spiritually?
I am a cooked food vegetarian but realize I must make the jump to the high vibe, life-filled diet of raw foods.
The longest I was on a strictly raw foods diet was 16 days and I got intense cravings for protein, but I wasn't eating much protein (nuts, seeds, nut cheeses, etc.), I was only having basically raw vegetables, avocados, etc. I know I have to do it differently this time. I can't have much fruit, due to hypoglycemia and candida.
Please could you e-mail me with any advice you might have? Maybe some testimonials or suggestions.
Thank You! Love and Radiant Health to all of you. May the Blessings Be!

Hello,
I am touched by your honesty, your persistance and your courage. Your story is truly inspirational!
I was on the web just now because I needed some encouragement to get back to my raw diet after three days of eating cooked food suppers.
My husband and I are separated only because I am in Canada awaiting my immigeration papers. He had to return to the U.S.A. four days ago and I've been comforting myself with cooked food ever since.
Thanks for "listening",

I have been trying the raw foods thing becouse I started having trouble( stomach pain) wiht the "regular Foods". When I can stick to the diet I feel great so I guess it works.
However I was watching the news and they were talking about how we calcium and iron, etc. Do we need those minerals, and if so how do you get them without consuming milk and meats?

hi I've been on a raw food diet for a couple of months and I feel really good, even though I sometimes have these cravings for other food consisting of wheat or dairy but I hold out and the craving goes. I find as a full time student and a mother, leading a very busy life, it is important to eat regulary so I don't get that hungry that I crave for some carbohydrate food or something that is unhealthy. The way I got into this raw food was visiting a naturopath for my son who is 11, he is a bed wetter and she told me to change his diet, however, he is finding it difficult to eliminate certain foods. Has anyone had a betwetter in the family or do they know what has worked to get kids to eat more healthier. My problem is that we live around family members that are totally opposed to my eating habits, I've been vegetarian for 10 years and no-one in the family has accepted it thus when my son goes visiting his grandma she feeds him all the wrong foods and tells him this is good for him so he gets contradicto
ry information and has got used to his grandmother's cooking as she does cook for him whilst I am at Uni.

I have a 14 yr. old son who is obese. We have not tried strict dieting, but have been adhering to close monitoring of caloric intake and have worked very hard at high levels of activity, all of which in combination should have started to show some results, and have not. I am investigating the possibility of a raw food diet, and the mere thought of giving up the weekend afternoon of barbequed chicken or steaks, as well as all the other foods we are accustomed to and enjoy does not really excite me. And, we are committed to doing whatever it takes. My son has even requested liposuction due to his absolute desire to lose weight. If there are any stories out there that could give us motivation as to what could be expected by this diet, we would appreciate same being shared with us. Please help. Thank you in advance.

We're Starr and Tomas, a married couple formerly from Chicago and now living in
Houston, Texas. Starr was into natural hygiene but fell away into pure
vegetarianism for a decade, and has now adopted an 80% raw diet to heal a
thyroid problem. Tomas is originally from Veracruz, where he ate spicy foods
and raw chiles until gout forced him to adopt a raw diet.
We'd like to hear from other "raw fooders" who have been at it awhile for

others who were healed of thyroid and gout via a raw foods diet.

I never realized there was so much information out there about natural hygiene.
I've been experimenting with natural hygiene for the last two months, and have
never felt so good. I've read Fit for Life and the very candid Total Health
Makeover (by Henner). I've practically eliminated red meat and dairy from my diet
(although giving up cheese is still tough). Food combining isn't as difficult
or as boring as I thought it would be, even on a college campus. My skin has
cleared up, my nails are stronger than every, and the weight is, slowly but
surely, coming off. I discovered that I even LIKE soy!!!! Keep the information
coming.

Hi Zephyr,
Love your site and your book. Would you mind telling me if you still have any vegens practicing instinctive eating in pangaia, and how they are faring? And for how long they have been doing this?
I'm wondering if its possible to remain healthy doing instinctive eating if we refrain from animal products?
Thanks so much, and thanks for the website.

I learned of raw foods from Natures First Law in San Diego - and went raw
for three and a half months last year (97). Now I'm learning again through
research/reading and practice. I've found Instinctotherapy for instance,
very informative and well referenced. Any suggestions for books and even places
to study pertinent or relevent issues are greatly welcome. Like minded people
in the South East U.S. please get in touch. I'm interested in creating a raw
foods retreat in the Southern Appalachians, orchards and all.

Hi!
Don't be so hard on yourself if this is not happening over night. You didn't get where
you are over night also. Raw foods are an incredible way to rid yourself of
costly addictions. You will begin to see things and experience things you
where not able to see/hear/touch before.
Honour your body/mind/soul and have a relationship with God.
Remember God doesn't create junk.
Any people wishing to communicate and share please feel free to do so.
Excellent site and another good one is www.living-foods.com

Great site. I'm just starting to read more about raw foods and am trying to incorporate them into my diet, with the final goal of eating almost all raw foods. I wish there was more education on this issue. Most people who hear that I am trying to switch to raw think I'm slightly whacked.
In any case, it is great to know that there are other people out there that are already enjoying the benefits of eating raw. Thanks, guys!

Am also looking to start up a support group in my area, Southeastern PA, so if

Good for you to be clean for 9 years. Just a caution: you sound like a
lot of x-drunks & junkies in that you are still fanatically beating your-
self up. Now it's b/c you can't stick to a raw diet. So what? Eat some
cooked food once in a while. Certain steamed veggies won't hurt you!! Be
moderate! Take it easy!! Enjoy your newfound clearheadedness! Live well!
Anything can be harmful if taken to an extreme--including raw food. So
keep in mind that you've already left behind your obsessive days. Don't
worry about masturbating. That won't hurt you either! Just don't do it in
public like Pee Wee Herman and get sent to jail. You've already done so
much in the way of self-improvement. Relax. Feel proud. You're inspiring.

Truly interesting, holistic approach to life. Engrossing life story. Made me think of my life history. My parents were Polish and in 1952, in Germany, they were asked if we would like to go to Canada, United States or Australia. My mother chose Australia but because the reason was that her best friend went there, we were sent to Canada as DP's. What a surprise to see all this food in this country, like we have never seen. Oranges were always such a luxury in Europe. Thankfully we did not buy into the processed foods and white "cotton" bread.
My journey into wholesome nutrition started in the seventies before my pregnancies. I joined a gym, took up yoga and read all of Adelle Davis's nutrition books. Whoops, I'm running away with my thoughts and the hour is late. I will delve into this site another time and learn more. I did enjoy it. Thank you so much and take care. Diane

Thanks for taking the time to educate other people. I am currently teaching myself how to get and stay healthy. I know that I cannot depend on the medical community to understand the body that I live in daily.
A few weeks ago, I tried a 3 day juice fast and survived 1 day. I felt tremendously better and am looking for ways to incorporate this into my life. I already have a juicer and am contemplating a Vita-Mix which supposedly is more whole food focused.
My goal is to replace at least one meal per day with a liquified meal. Can you tell me anything about the features/benefits of both types of products?

My girlfriend has CFS and has been on a raw food diet as prescribed by Aajonus Vonderplanitz for the past 6 weeks. She is feeling good, but has recently expressed serious concern over the health risks involved in eating raw animal products (meat/fish/eggs/milk). Beyond all the pseudo-science and intuitive hype, does anyone have some sound knowledge that can help alleviate her (and mine!) concern... or confirm her concern, and adjusting her diet accordingly. Our main concern is the risk of contracting a serious virus. What controls are out there? Are some farms "safer" than others? You get my drift--- please someone respond-- especially those in the Medical and Nutritional fields. Also, is it myth that raw animal products provide better health than cooked? Thanks, Larry.

It doesn't matter what you eat providing you don't stuff yourself with excess protein from seeds, nuts and legumes. 1.5kg mixed fruit and 1.5kg mixed vegetables per day will provide ALL the nutritional goodies a human adult requires. Divided into 4 or 6 meals throughout the 16 waking hours will maintain high energy levels and assist the body to maintain itself in maximum health.

Dear Melanie,
have you heard of instinctotherapy / anapsology devbeloped by the frenchman Guy-claude Berger 10 or 15 years ago? I have a book 'la guerre du cru' which I found immensely convincing and inspiring. In 1986 I used this diet for 6 months (just for fun..) but it was too hard & I stopped. Now I experimenting again because I'm overweight and don't feel I'm eating the richt things. If you read French this book could be interesting. Good luck - and: be sure to have a say in where you next move to(and wether you should move...)

Extremely interesting and informative. I try to drink a good amount of
fruit and vegetable juice, as well as using vitamin and mineral supple-
ments, although I haven't given up on processed foods and other foods
that unfortunately make up the typical American diet. However, I'll
keep reading and learning and, eventually, I'll get there.
My significant other has a great deal of medical problems, and, since
conventional medicine hasn't worked for her, she's interested in all
alternative treatments through nutrition, etc. Keep up the great work
of keeping people informed!

I'm just starting out. I've only begun to apply this lifestyle. I've been following the "Fit For Life" plan with a friend and my mom for about three weeks now. I'm a little frustrated with the weight loss aspect, because my friend has lost six pounds, my mom has lost eight pounds, and I've only lost two. I do feel great though and am determined to continue.
Thanks!

I have been cruising the raw food pages for about 6 months and this is the first time I have been inspired to respond. I too am an off again on again raw fooder. I am an alcoholic who has found that being on a raw food diet is the only way for me to stay off of alcohol. I lost over 100 lbs on raw foods and never looked or felt better in my life. Thanks for the inspiration.
Congratulations on your recovery, Cindy

Hi everyone! I've been studying vegetarianism, veganism, and raw foods for a number of years. I'd like to hear from people that have practised any of these lifestyles for EXTENDED (>10 years) periods of time with SUCCESSFUL results. Am particularly interested in ethnic heritage and BLOOD TYPE, if you know it. Thanks!

Rhio, I loved reading your recipes and can't wait to try them.
I don't have a printer yet, so it will be easier when I can get
a hard copy instead of having to copy ingredients and possibly
make a mistake.
I've been to two weeks of Optimum Health Institute and had miraculous
health benefits from raw food.

I have been eating a raw/live food diet for 14 years successfully, and have seriously researched the health ramifications of this type of diet. I own a vegetarian restaurant in Bethesda Maryland called Thyme Square Cafe, formerly GreenCity Market and Cafe. GreenCity offered a delicious, nearly all-raw cuisine. The business was not, however a financial success, so we redesigned it as a more broad-based vegetarian restaurant, which is working well, although, unfortunately, not offering the raw food cuisine.

First of all, I'd like to say I do agree with everyone of you who say that a 100%
raw food diet is the best thing for your health. In fact, I have been a raw foodist
for about 25 years now, and I'm incredibly healthy. I'm 67 years old and I have
never felt so good. I eat only fruits, vegetables and nuts. No meat and no milk.
I just can't believe some of you still believe that meat and dairy is good stuff.

Looking for a lengthy (at least a week) retreat or an on-going community to visit so that I can try out raw foodism with a group. Can't seem to get started on my own here. Also, how to be a fruitarian in a temperate climate? Fruit don't grow in the winter, and my body rails against eating apples and apples for months on end!

Hello! It was very interesting visit I must say. I´ve been interested in these things for several years. I´ve had a few courses also about healthy nutrition here in Finland.
I´m not completely a vegeterian myself, every now and then i eat fish and my mothers meatballs, which are the best. But afterwards I don´t feel that good and vigorous. Step by step...going to the right direction.
It was nice to read the stories, nice to notice that there really are people who think the same way.
My interest began after reading one of the books by Ann Wigmore. And my life hasn´t been the same since!

medications prescribed by my doctors was to no avail. I have been interested in juicing

better. If you have other helpful information on this, I would be extremely

Hi Larelle! I'm pretty sure the same Larelle who sometimes shows up on the "Bulletin Board" at Living Foods.com. I always enjoy your reading your thoughts. I've had a hard time with live foods lately, but I think I'm getting it right - FOR ME! For me, since I'm having trouble w/all raw food (deep ridges in my fingernails, gum disease, mental confusion and extreme tiredness, dry skin, etc.), I'm adding some protein to my raw diet for awhile, in the most pallatable forms possible. By the way, thanks for your kind words on the Bulletin Board a couple weeks back when I was real down. The support of kindred spirits really helps. Good luck in your own journey! Since you are involved in Nutrition, is there something you can do to
convince the Federal Government that too much salt, sugar and fat in all
the foods we consume do not help children grow healthy, and adults diets
do not permit to eat properly before and after they become diabetics? I also
believe that all that money saved can be put to research and free medicine
for the victims of that terrible illness as well as heart and cancer
research.

What does this article have to do with detoxing? How would Steve notice if you detoxed? Why is it taking 7 years for your brother to detox? Isn't that a long time? This is incomplete. Maybe there is a mistake, and somehow half of the article is missing? How do you detox?

Am 54 years old, single and my kids have moved west. My father, who's 85, has been dealing with cancer the last year and a half. When he makes his transition I too would like to move west.
The challenge for me would be establishing a whole new set of friends in a strange town. That is why I am investigating communities such as yours which mesh with my beliefs and lifestyle.
I'm thrilled that you're around. Thank You

Hi!
I was on the raw food diet for 15 months (4-96 - 6-97) and have now come back. I am not able to maintain my energy all week long raw or not. I am frustratingly relying on my husband but hopeful. I made a batch of rejuvelac last week and a seed sauce with it and enjoyed a pleasant energy. I am hoping this addition to my diet is just what I need. Waiting for the new batch.
I love the books you offer but I think I am all set for now. Your website is great. I will be visiting again soon.

I read about natural hygeine after I had gained loads of weight in my pregnancy. As soon as I started eating
that way, I lost all the weight very quickly and easily. I felt very energetic, too. It's so wonderful and obviously, to me, the correct way for humans to eat.

I find this web page very interesting being myself a vegan wannabe, however I was a little unimpressed with the fact that you there wasn't that much information available for people like me ,on how to change one's diet , the the nutritional benefits of doing so,or available substitutes. Not to mention that as some one not totally familiar with the jargon, a bit of explanation of certain things would be helpful, like, what exactly is sunflower seed cheese?

I am enjoying finding different theories on diet. Had never heard of many I am finding, but eating foods in their most pure form certainly is on target and I've thought that way for a long time. I look forward to learning more, but for now will follow once again the low carb(atkin's) once again with no fear of nutrient deficiency with the addition of neanderthin and instincto theories. Will also take additional nutrients to catch up what I've been lacking for a long time.
Continued success with your site. However, we do need to eat saturated fats for production of hormones necessary for normal function and energy. I did vegetarianism for nearly four years, becoming so strict (no lacto/ovo even) I was near to anorexia. My preschool boys grew 3-4 inches and pinked up, gained energy in only a couple months when returned to meat eating. Milk we don't need, but we do need meat with the fat intact. Be careful about judging others eating habits as well. The knowledge you have and believe now is quite apt to change and then you may need to aquire a taste for crow. Be kind and gentle with yourself and others.

I have just read "Instinctive Nutrition" which I bought at a book sale in Brisbane Australia. I am a vegetarian and believe strongly in that civilised food is making us sick . I have a 11 month old baby son and want to give him the best start possible but am unsure how to apply instinctive eating to him. I will keep searching for answers. Thanks for an interesting read.

I just read 'Enzyme Nutrition' by Dr. Edward Howell and I am convinced!
I am starting to eat some raw foods, and take some enzyme supplements.
I admit that I now have the Standard American Diet (SAD), and changing
diet seems like a significant change in lifestyle. I would appreiate
any recommendations, advice, etc... to get started on this path.

I have had my Angel Food juicer for several weeks now and I am very pleased with its performance. The vegetable juice quality is excellent. The pulp is quite dry. I store the gears in the freezer between uses. Then when I make juice, it is cooled in the process. The juicer operates at low RPM which doesn't add air to the juice. This produces the best quality juice I have seen. The juicer costs about $650. It doesn't juice fruit though. Anything softer than a very crisp apple comes out as a mush and very little juice is produced. The juicer is designed to juice tougher items like veggies which it does very well.

I wanna move!!! To where there's more fruit! Anyone know of a group/people who are looking to move where there is a more plentiful supply of fresh fruits than upstate NY in USA?? Doesn't matter what country, just want to go someplace tropical with a wide selection of fruits. I am a Sahaja Yogi. In this group, even the founder suggests cooked food...Blech!! I also need contacts for the time being in New York until I move so I feel like I'm not so alone. Out of my entire town, I seriously think I am the only fruitarian. Please help me!!!
I want my mommy, but even she eats cooked foods. I am a 23-y-o college student who is very ready to pick up and GO! I've had it with this climate way up north. I need to be around others who are eating as healthily as I am. I'll probably start a support group here before long. I am into fruits only so I don't want any letters from vegetables!! To the human race-thank you very much for your concern. Loads of love...

Hello you all! I would like to greet everyone who is "infected" with the idea of going 100% raw and who is trying
to live just on light and who is trying to safe the planet. Here in Trier there are at least 15 raw fooders in the
nearest area. Two of them (me included) live 100% on raw fruit, sometimes we add little amounts of raw nut or salad or
vegetable. I´m searching for a place where I can live without money, where nothing is polluted and where tropical climate
allows to grow nice and tasty fruit. Where is this paradise? If I tried to do this in the EU, I would be chasen and
treated like a criminalist. I want to hide!

Hello to all of you,
I eat only raw fruits for about a year now and it was pretty hard to resist all the temptations, especially during
the summer holidays in a hotel (fixed meals).
I wonder if anybody from warm places (I m cold all the time) is willing to offer me their home for a week or two during the summer
in exchange for any kind of house work.
HOPE to hear from U.

Keep up with this page. It is the best I have read. Living foods take us closer to Creation and to the Beginning of all things. When I say things, I refer to our bodies and all other creation, but not to out soul, because it has always existed. If you think about it, we are older than the sun.

Enjoyed running through the surf here: Raw foods are a step in the rigt direction, they have however found that because of our environment, even our raw fruits and veggies aren't giving us all they did say 50 years ago. Harpers Biochemestry just recently stated that it's been discovered that the cells of our bodies need 8 essential carbohydrates or glyconutrients. If they do not have these 8 simple surgars, they miss-communicate and bad things begin to happen. Auto immune disorders are most all associated with bad cell to cell communication. Glyconutrients and phytochemicals are non toxic, their natural, and from what's being found in the peer reviewed studies they are working incredibly well. Keep eating the raw stuff, but don't miss out on these essential surgars, and by the way I'm not talking about table surgar. Thought this would be of interest to your readers. Can supply additional info if needed. Again, I enjoyed your guestbook. Neil D E-mail castlelandasundersk.simpatico.ca

Looking for immediate source of $380,000 to pay off 38-acres with largest old mango orchard on Big Island, Hawaii, virtually oceanfront, bordering pastures on 2 sides, with hundreds of huge, old mango trees, 50-100 years old, and 50-75 feet tall, forming cool shady canopy near ocean, with almost never any traffic along this picturesque Beach Road, with an access through tree canopies, with only 5 other people living along whole 5 mile-long road. Also dozens of giant coconut palms create a resort-like setting. This year, 1998, is going to be the most prolific year in memory for mangos -- we estimate that this old orchard will produce between 1-2 million pounds of mangos -- and there are at least 20 varieties. Our plan is to dry the mangos. Near-perfect climate, cleanest environment in Hawaii, gorgeous property itself, in an awesome location, and with the ultimate in privacy and seclusion. Contact Bob S. asunder (808) 966-4977 or message at (808) 334-3266. Ideal site for health retreat or resort.

Dammit! Cook your food! You pathetic poor fools don't realize what your missing!
You eat raw foods to be more "natural." Ever think that if wild animals had more
use of there hands and minds that they would rather cook their meat before eating it?
I think that if Wile E. Coyote ever catched the Road Runner, he will cook the damn
bird! Come on he's in the southwest. He can add some Acme salsa to it. COOKED FOOD RULES

I like reading the bios and seeing that other folks are struggeling with
the same things that I am. I've been trying to eat raw. In fact, a year
ago I was fasting and eating raw and getting tons of work done and feeling
great and then... Some sort of self-destruct mode kicked in and I went on
an eating RAMPAGE. It seems like the harder I tried to take care of myself,
the crazier my binges got. I gained 82 pounds in one year and am heavier
than I even knew possible. I am seriously worried about my health. I
remember feeling fabulous and having a crystal clear mind when I was eating
raw. What happened? Where did that go? Why can't I stick to my guns? I'm
very discouraged, but I know the answer lies here somewhere, because I keep
coming back to it.

thank your for a great site!
ive been mostly reading and gradually moving more and more into a raw food diet although i am limited because i house sit and the owners wouldnt be very happy if i rearranged their kitchen and other spaces for my own needs.
i met ann wigmore 8 years ago in denver when she came to lecture here and four years ago she and i had worked out a plan for me to live at her puerto rico site (is that place still open?) but she died in a fire soon after.
i was to live and work at her site for about a year in exchange for the education she would provide. i had hoped to then take that education and open a new center in denver where i live.
do you know of other sites that might be willing to offer such an exchange (currently i am unemployed with very little funds)

Thanks for the inspiration. I have been interested in a more natural way of life for a long time. I first read Zepphyr's book on Instictive ZEating in Ojai, Ca in 1997 where I nmet a practitioner. Unfortunately, I am just coming out of a major bout of depression brought on by a solitary life in the suburbs. I left for a while to tour the Rainbow circuit, but that didn't satisfy the longing I felt for a sustainable simple, communal way of life. Because I had no support, I took some wrong turns and ended up pretty obsessive about food and health whil trying to be a lonely, compulsive vegan/perfect eater, trying to give my body every"perfect" combination of food or "miracle" vitamin I read about. But since I am allergic to tofu, and was apparently made myself so sensitive to food and energy, with no foundation, that I am trying to simply maintain a middle path and build my life and strength of spirit back up. Well- again, thank you for being pioneers in this new way of life. I would truely appreciate an
y information and contact/s available. God/dess bless. :)

Rawtimes is a fantastic website! For me raw foodism is a solitary existance at
the moment. It has really made a positive difference to me to be able to learn
more about others' experiences whilst following this path. Please keep up the
excellent and valuable work! Is there anyone else in Melbourne, Australia
interested in raw foods?

Very interesting. I try to follow a natural diet, having been into naturopathy most of my life, and though I know an all raw diet makes sense, it is not easy, especially living with a meat/curries/fish & chips man! At present I am mostly vegetarian (still eat fish) but only partly raw. The recipe book has given me some new ideas. I will continue to visit site. Surprised to find no comments from UK. Anyone out there?

Great story. I have lived on raw foods for extended periods of time.
I am trying to find my way back to fruitarianism just because there I have
peace. I eat starch (popcorn, potatoes,) and I turn into a starch
addict and find myself with less energy and a less than positive outlook.
At times I have done juice only for weeks at a time. Clear eyes, melodic voice, patience, no fear, just smiles and contentment. How do I find my way
back there I keep asking myself each and every morning when I get

My instincts say the Green Power is the better juicer; but the advertising for the Vita-Mix also sounds good (especially the part about using the whole fruit juice, instead of the extracted juice. If you could give me some input I would really appreciate it. Just e-mail to me. Thanks in advance!! Jody Jean

I have found great success with a product called Juice Plus+ manufactured
by National Safety Asssociates. The company literature says "It's made from
the freshest, highest quality fruits and vegetables we can find - 7
different fruits in our Orchard Blend, 10 different vegetables and grains
in our Garden Blend. We juice then to extract their essence, then reduce
the juice to powder using a proprietary process. Our all-natural
ingredients are never exposed to high temperatures that destroy much of the
nutritional value of fruits and vegetables, like when we cook them. Much of
the nuitrition found in the fresh, raw fruits and vetegables thus remains
intact, making Juice Plus+ the next best thing to eating fresh, raw fruits
and vegetables." I live in Michigan where fresh fruit and vegetables are
not available in winter. During the summer, we visit the Farmers Market
each Saturday. I have used the product for 2 years now as a great
supplement or replace the "real thing".

COLO-RECTAL INFORMATION REGARDING WILLIAM G WALTON III
12/02/97
HISTORICAL REFERENCE
I was born in 1951. Even though I was born with the indication that I might have a neurological disorder, my disability, Spina Bifida, was not diagnosed until I was 10 years old. At this time, the indication was strictly orthopedic; gastro-intestinal ramifications existed but were not addressed, as there was no mention, in my recollection, of any association with the Spina Bifida (SB)[1][2]
When I was a baby, I had the colic, but early GI problems were confined to having bowel movements at inappropriate times (accidents); I can vividly recall this happening as early as age 5.
When I turned 17, I was diagnosed with a spastic colon and was put on a regimen of Lomotil/Donnatol , Metamucil, and a bland diet, primarily of cottage cheese and sliced canned peaches on a bed of lettuce. The medications did virtually nothing to treat the supposed cause of my colon’s spasticity[3], and it wasn’t until I ingested Cannabis Sativa for the first time a year later that any relief was experienced.
At age 23, my bladder showed signs of retaining urine and 3 years later it was diagnosed as being neurogenic. I have since then been on an intermittent catherization program with Mandelamine prophylaxis.
Three years ago, I began experiencing bowel incontinence, sporadic at first. However, my incontinence quickly became more and more of a problem. Upon an exam by a doctor of gastroenterology, it was determined that I suffered from fecal obstipation and a direct link to my SB was finally made. Nothing was prescribed for me at this time.
Other than severe gas, I was unable to ‘sense’ when I needed to have a BM and consequently it became necessary for me to wear protective undergarments pretty much 24/7. An alternative medicine practitioner suggested I try chewing Licorice Root to help ease the gas pains. I felt uncomfortable telling her about my incontinence. In 1996, at the suggestion of my Urologist, I had an anal EMG done to determine the amount of sphincter muscle tone; the results, not surprisingly, showed little or no control whatsoever. The nurse conducting the test did not recommend colon irrigation.
On September 5, 1997, I underwent a successful surgical procedure to untether my TC. Since the surgery, my bowel management has been in a state of turmoil. At first, only a small amount of fecal matter (approximately one tablespoon) would actually leak out onto my undergarments. The doctor who performed the surgery on my TC recommended that I use a laxative. I chose Correctal and was able to experience a BM within 36 hours of taking it. My pharmacist suggested I use Metamucil and I found no significant change in my movements for so doing. Basically, for about 2 months, I would go through a vicious cycle of taking the laxative in order to achieve a movement. Approximately three weeks ago, I contacted my physician again and he directed me to a nurse (Jeanie) who runs the SB Outpatient Clinic She immediately put me on a bowel management program of weekly colon irrigation[4], and if necessary, usage of Ducolax suppositories. Under no circumstances was I to use an OTC laxative. It was also suggested that I increas
e the amount of fruit and vegetables in my diet and drink as much water as I could.[5] Recently, Jeanie asked me to up the number of colon irrigations to 3 times per week.
CURRENTLY
Since the advent of my colon irrigation I have felt remarkably better!!! I occasionally will have a normal BM but generally the fecal matter only gets expelled through the cleansing process. I am supposed to keep Jeanie apprised of my progress, the goal being to once again have "normal for me" bowel movements; specifically, she wants to eliminate movements at inappropriate times. I understand from speaking with other adults with SB, that, after TC surgery, vital organs affected by the disorder may either get worse than, better than, or remain the same as prior to surgery; and, that it may take up to a year before my system stabilizes. I am meeting many adults with SB on 12/13 and hope to ask more questions about their dealings with bowel management, and if in fact, any ot them is using colon hydrotherapy.
LOOKING TO TOMORROW
It is my sincere hope that someday my bowels will return to ‘normal’ functionality. Except for the past three years, when I was experiencing accidents on an almost daily basis, I reasonably expected to have a large volume, semi-solid consistency BM every 2-3 days. , I am currently involved with a registered Colon Hydrotherapist in my area receiving 2-3 treatments per week...the results so far have been small but promising
[1] The official medical term for my particular variant of SB is Lipomyleomenogicele (LMM)
[2] In May of 1997, MRI exams were done to confirm the presence of a Tethered Cord (TC), which occurs in patients with LMM and is the cause of progressive active nerve damage over a prolonged period of time. In my particular case, as the TC occurred in the S1-S5 region of the spine, the nerves affected were those corresponding to the bladder, the bowel and the lower extremities.
[3] On the subject of stress, I had always been a nervous child, and this aspect of my personality remains with me as an adult today, although I seem to be getting better at handling stressful situations. On the subject of drugs and alcohol, I have had neither, except caffeine, since 1992.
[4] I am using a Convatec/Squibb Visi-Flow Irrigator comprised of a calibrated 2000cc bag, flow indicator and regulator and a pliable stoma cone.(the cone is designed to retain the fluid in the bowel)
[5] Unfortunately, due to my bladder management program I am restricted as to the amount of fluids I may ingest as an overabundance weakens the efficacy of the Mandelamine, a bacteriostatic agent that keeps the urine ‘germ-free’.

We, my wife and daughter, have been baking whole wheat bread for many years and that led to rethinking how and what we ate. Our change in lifestyle, of eating, allowed me to move my weight back to where I was in High School at 190 pounds. The whole family has experienced great success health wise with the change. We basically cut out the dairy products, white flour, white sugar and attempt to eat as much raw foods as possible. We also use some products from AIM corporation that have given us tremendous results in that same area of health. I wish the best to you in your efforts to be different and live a more healthy and satisfying life. Read up on the colon and its function; you will have your eyes opened to what you need and the dangers of not making changes.
best regards,

I am a beginning raw foodist. H E L P!!!!!! I need to do this for health reasons but am having a terrible time. Being raised in the South where we cook and season everything to death, this is a real challenge to me. Not to mention that I am not a real handy person in the kitchen but I am determined to do this somehow so any help you can supply would be most appreciated.

I also started following the Natural Hygiene principles last December, 1997, and the results are just great! My grades are getting better and I lost 10 lbs. However, I got a so-called viral infection from my mom, and I 'm just wondering why I got sick when I've been following the principles well for months now. Oh, maybe not so diligently, because I've been eating a number of chocolates and sometimes, I stay up late. But is that the real reason? I'm really curious...
By the way, this is my mom's e-mail address. Her name is Vicky, and I hope you answer back!

Hi! I am the Oxford Vegetarians Society student contact at the
University of Oxford, England. I came from Venezuela and belong to
a minority group of vegan people there. We call ourselves
'naturistas' (spanish word) meaning the 'ones who like to be
as close as they can to nature', but that doesn't have anything to
do with nudists.
I have found your web page after I tasted a wheat sprout & raisins
bread. This delicious but simple bread surprised me, and I wanted
to know more about sprouts. Seems to me that your style of life
is absolutely healthy, but expensive and time consuming as well.
Oh, yes, especially for a student budget. Besides that I have no idea
about where to buy or how to build a dehydrator.
Anyway, I have to work on my research, no time for lovely raw foods,
thank you for your page. Cheers!

Although I am originally a Canadian (who has also lived in the U.S.A.),
I came across a pamphlet/book called Spiritual-Physical Survival thru
Living Foods by Ann Wigmore. I seem to remember going to a home centre
type of place while we were living in Perth, Western Australia and came
across a seminar that was just ending. We started to talk to the people
there and ended up purchasing this book/pamphlet. It went on the shelf
along with my other Vegetarian cookbooks until a couple of weeks ago. I am
interested in anything I can get my hands on as far as living foods. Our
5 year old is a vegetarian but eats dairy and eggs. My husband and I have
cut out meat but confess to the odd bit of fish. I am interested in taking
us, as a family, in the living foods direction.

We are starting out on a fruitarian diet. Thought we would have a look around the internet to see what information we could find. We have both been progressing toward live food for many years. A couple of weeks ago we decided to go whole hog (Fruit hog that is)((you don't know what a fruit hog is ? Neither do we, if you find out let us know and maybe we can share one)) and try fruitarian.
Dorcas strives to be fruitarian but sometime has cravings for cooked vegetables, which she has had, but as time goes on these cravings are becomming less. Also her appistat is satisfied more often and her hunger pangs have decreased significantly. Early days yet but fingers crossed.
I have been doing pretty well. I have resorted to some mixed nuts on occasions, aside from this I am 100% fruitarian
We are both loosing weight and out staminar is increasing. We both feel happier and feel that we can think more clearly. Both of us have observed a derease in bloating and feel a lot lighter.
Would love to hear any comments that you have to make. Maybe you would be interested in having us support you in your quest and for you to support us ?
All the best
Stewart and Dorcas.

Very interesting.  I have considered switching to raw foods exclusively for some time now and I have been on the verge for years.  I am allergic to wheat so most baked goods and pasta are out of the question anyway unless I make them myself.  Really the only times I eat cooked food is when I want steamed vegetables or something.  Anyhow...it's food for thought ( ;

Loved your web page. Each time I check it out it just gets better and better.
If you are ever in the Baltimore area look me up and we can get together.
If you remember I was running the veg-raw/raw-foods mailing list for awhile. Its sort
of exciting to me that so many mailing lists have arisen out of that list - even
the one by John Coleman who I kicked off the list. I remember telling him that instead
of complaining he should start his own list - that he could probably run one better
than I could.
The link to the paleolithic web page and the Ward interviews brought back a lot of
memories. Wards postings to the list really had a major effect on my diet. At the
time I found it hard to recover from prolonged or strenuous physical exercise
while on an all raw diet. I would just get really hungry and not be able to eat
enough to feel satisfied. In one of his posts Ward mentioned that he occasionally
ate a (horrors) poached egg. While I was on a bicycle ride the week before I had
been craving eggs. When i read that post it was all over - I started with the
poached eggs and started feeling much better. I started eating a lot of protein
in the form of eggs (poached or raw) and raw milk cheese. At first I felt really good.
My strength started coming back and I was able to lift weights and gain strength.
After I while it got that I was overdoing the protein and cooked foods (mainly steamed
vegetables and potatoes - usually soaked in raw olive oil). I also suspected I
had developed a zinc deficiency and began taking zinc supplements. What I'm doing
now is sort of in-between. Normally I eat raw for breakfast and lunch and cooked
for dinner. I don't feel as good as when I first did raw foods but it seems to be a
diet I can live with for an extended time.
I am doing a "spiritual apprenticeship" workshop. One of our assignments is to do
a juice fast one day a week. This is pretty easy as I just go to Fresh Fields
and buy a few quarts of fresh juice in the morning. After years of raw foods and
with a relatively clean current diet the juice fast is pretty easy. It leaves me feeling lighter
and clearer. I usually do take a zinc supplement on the day of the fast.
I was surprised to read about your addictions history. It was pretty powerful.
I've been in some 12 step programs though my addictions weren't as strong as yours.
To be honest I was never all that good about doing the steps in a structured manner.
However I found the ability to share with people who could relate to my experiences
incredibly beneficial. I am not currently involved with any of them but they did get me started
in a whole new direction in life. Its hard to imagine what my life would have been
like without them.
All the best.

Hello! I'm Ernie. I am so glad that the people here at Raw Times have a space for us to connect. I've been fasting and using raw foods for 20 years. I've been eating raw foods for 17 years. I've gone from 85 to 99% raw foods on and off for the past 5 years and about 99% all raw right now. I've been reading some of the letters that are left on the raw food times and I'm impressed and would like to communicate with some of the other people. I've been in aerobics for 15 years and working out and body building while fasting. Currently, 99% raw foods and I'm temporarily disabled with a neck injury. I'm 41 years old, handsome, 6'1", interested in meeting my mate. I don't know what else to say.

HI!!! I am so into going fruitarian. It's me, my boyfriend and our unborn baby, but I need some books, advice, pregnancy tips and inspiration.... We really want to come over to San Diego as we have seen all the "Natures first Law" videos and fell in love with your youthful energy and passion for life.
Some days I'm good and some days I crave shocking salty, fatty, foods. I know that it makes me feel so dead, depressed and moody and am FULLY ready to jump in the deep end....
Please e-mail me!

This site is great. I am aspiring to go totally raw, as I already eat mostly raw anyway. Thanks for all the info and recipes.

Hi JR,
Just took a look at your page and really like the frames. There is not as much overhead as I thought and the pages draw just fine. I read the post about the light bulb. I think it's very funny. By the way can I have frames too.
Love,

Wow! Your story is compelling and intriguing. Thanks so much for sharing.
I went through a life-threatening health problem and stumbled on to fasting and Natural Hygiene. The end result was I went on 3, water-only fasts. The first for 7 days. The second, some months later for 20 days. The third for a total of 34 days during which I came close to death, not because of the fast but the disease. Two physicians recommended I go to an acute care hospital immediately as my death appeared immenent. I determined if I were going to die I'd prefer it to be where I was getting TLC rather than an impersonal hospital where I'd be jerked around and filled full of poisonous anti-biotics and be separated from my loved ones when I needed them most. Surprise. After several days of intense fever and hovering near death, the fever broke and I started refeeding with raw juices. I ate raw for a total of 1 year, a New Year's Eve promise to myself that it took me many years to develop into the diseased person I was, that I would devote at least one year of eating raw to see if it would heal my problem. Th
e trick turned out to be learning that eating all raw, without discrimination, could also be harmful, and was. I had to learn to eat what my body would tolerate to become well. After the fast, during which all my organs got revitalized and other serious things were healed, within 3 months of eating that which was suitable to my body, the life-threatening cyst the size of a cantaloupe was completely resolved. That was about 6 or 8 years ago. Now I teach other people how to get healthy without drugs or surgery.

Hi Heide,
I've had a couple of chronic problems (one involving nerve damage in my foot for which I've had two unsuccessful surgeries) and I've gone from being an athletic 39 year old to an overweight sedentary 43 year old. I've come to the conclusion that most of my problems are with my diet and lifestyle. Yet, I've found no doctors that know didly about nutrition, only surgery and prescribing medications. I purchased a juicer and have started to read as much as I can on juicing, etc. I'm now leaning about wheatgrass and it's uses and came upon your websight. If you have time to send me any info. I would be grateful. Know you're probably busy. Sorry I don't live in the Washington, DC area. Best of luck to you in your classes.

JR: I just starting reading posts during Xmas vacation and I sent one already.
I don't have a bio done yet, but I told a fair amount about myself in that
first post. Great forum! I'm so glad I stumbled into it. I'm not even sure
how I did anymore. I'll try to get bio done soon. I very much enjoy the site
and discovering that there are other people out there trying to get a grip on
this way of eating and coping with it in this wonderful cooked world of ours.
Kudos for a great job. Love your work! Raw food eating I must say is the
greatest discovery of my life and it is a joy to spread the word even though
most people don't respond to the message.
